When a Puncture Can Be Safely Repaired
British Standard BS AU 159 governs the conditions under which a tyre puncture can be properly repaired. A repair is only appropriate when the puncture is located within the central three-quarters of the tread, when the damage is caused by a round object no larger than 6mm in diameter, and when the tyre has not been driven on while significantly deflated.
A proper repair involves removing the tyre from the rim, inspecting the inside of the carcass for hidden damage, and fitting a combined patch-and-plug from the inside. An external plug-only repair, while common at roadside, is considered a temporary measure and not a permanent fix to the BS standard.
When Replacement Is the Only Safe Option
Sidewall damage cannot be repaired under any circumstance. The sidewall of a tyre flexes continuously as you drive, and any repair in this area is liable to fail at speed. If the puncture or damage is located in the sidewall, shoulder, or too close to the bead, the tyre must be replaced regardless of the external appearance.
Tyres that have been driven on while completely flat — even for a short distance — should also be replaced. Driving on a flat tyre causes internal structural damage to the carcass that is often invisible from the outside but dramatically increases the risk of a blowout when the tyre is reinflated.
Cost Comparison: Repair vs Replacement
A professional puncture repair typically costs between £15 and £30 including fitting. A new budget tyre starts from around £50–£60, while mid-range options typically begin at £70–£90. When a repair is a valid option, it is clearly the more economical choice — though the safety criteria must always take precedence over cost considerations.
Triumph Mobile Tyres assesses every puncture at your location and advises honestly on whether a repair is safe and appropriate. If a repair is viable, we carry out a proper internal inspection and BS-compliant fix. If the tyre needs replacing, we fit a new one on the spot from our van stock.
