When to Make the Switch
The widely used rule of thumb for switching to winter tyres is when ambient temperatures consistently drop below 7°C — the point at which the summer tyre compound begins to stiffen and winter tyre compounds start to outperform them. In the UK, this typically occurs in November across most regions, and the switch back to summer tyres is usually appropriate from March onwards.
If you are monitoring daily temperatures rather than following the calendar, a useful trigger is when the overnight low regularly falls below 7°C. Do not wait for the first frost or snowfall — by then conditions have already moved past the point at which switching would have been most beneficial.
Storing Your Off-Season Tyres Correctly
Tyres that are stored incorrectly between seasons degrade faster than those in active use. The key requirements are a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight, ozone sources such as electric motors, and chemicals. Hanging tyres vertically from a hook degrades the sidewall over time — they should be stored upright on their tread, either freestanding or in a purpose-made tyre rack.
If tyres are stored off the rim — which is the recommended approach for long-term storage — deflate them slightly before storage to reduce the stress on the bead. Tyres stored on rims should be kept at approximately half their normal operating pressure.
