How Summer and Winter Tyres Differ
The fundamental difference between summer and winter tyres lies in the rubber compound. Winter tyres use a compound that remains soft and pliable at temperatures below 7°C, maintaining grip on cold, wet, and icy surfaces. Summer tyres use a harder compound that performs optimally in warmer conditions — below 7°C, that compound stiffens and grip levels decrease measurably.
Winter tyres also feature more sipes — fine cuts across the tread blocks — that create additional biting edges on snow and ice, and deeper grooves designed to evacuate slush and water more aggressively than summer tread patterns.
Do UK Drivers Actually Need Winter Tyres?
The UK does not experience the prolonged, severe winters common in Scandinavia or Central Europe, which is why winter tyres are not compulsory here as they are in several other European countries. However, the 7°C threshold that determines when winter tyres become more effective than summer ones is reached across much of the UK for a significant portion of the year — particularly in Scotland, northern England, and rural upland areas.
If you regularly drive in areas prone to frost, freezing fog, or snow, fitting winter tyres between November and March is a genuine safety upgrade. Studies show that vehicles on winter tyres stop in considerably shorter distances on cold, wet roads than those on summer tyres.
All-Season Tyres: A Practical UK Compromise
All-season tyres use a compound and tread design that attempts to split the difference between summer and winter performance. While they do not match dedicated summer tyres in warm conditions or dedicated winter tyres on ice, they perform acceptably in both — making them a sensible option for UK drivers in moderate-climate areas who do not want the hassle or cost of running two sets of tyres.
