Immediate Steps: Stay Safe First
If a tyre deflates while driving, resist the urge to brake sharply. Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel, ease off the accelerator gradually, and allow the vehicle to slow naturally. Steer to the nearest safe stopping point — ideally off the carriageway entirely, on a flat surface clear of traffic. On a motorway, move to the hard shoulder if one is present, switch on your hazard lights immediately, and position yourself behind the barrier rather than standing next to the vehicle.
Once stopped safely, apply the handbrake, switch on hazard lights if not already done, and if possible place a warning triangle at least 45 metres behind the vehicle. Never attempt a tyre change on a live carriageway. Your safety and the safety of other road users is the absolute priority.
Assessing the Damage
Once it is safe to do so, inspect the affected tyre. Look for the cause of the deflation — a nail, screw, or sharp object embedded in the tread suggests a repairable puncture may be possible. A visible split, a large gash, or any sidewall damage means the tyre must be replaced. A tyre that has been driven on while completely flat — even for a short distance — will typically also require replacement due to internal carcass damage.
Check whether your vehicle carries a spare wheel, a space-saver spare, or a tyre inflation kit. Space-saver spare wheels should only be used up to 50 mph and for short distances. Inflation kits are only effective for minor tread punctures and cannot address sidewall damage or significant tread failure.
Why Calling a Mobile Tyre Fitter Is Often the Smartest Move
For many drivers — particularly those without a full-size spare, those driving vans or SUVs with heavy wheels, or those in an unfamiliar location — calling a mobile tyre fitting service is the safest and most practical option. Triumph Mobile Tyres can reach most UK locations within a reasonable time, arrive with the correct replacement tyre for your vehicle, and complete the fitting professionally without you having to do anything other than wait safely.
Our emergency callout service is available around the clock. When you call, have your vehicle registration, your location, and ideally the tyre size ready — though our team can identify the correct specification from your registration alone if needed.
