How to Know When Your Tyres Need Replacing

Worn tyres are one of the leading causes of serious road accidents in the UK. Learn the key warning signs that tell you it is time to book a tyre replacement before it becomes dangerous.

The Legal Minimum Tread Depth in the UK

UK law requires all car tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around the entire circumference. Driving with tyres below this threshold carries a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre — potentially costing you your licence if multiple tyres are affected.

However, many tyre safety experts recommend replacing tyres at 3mm rather than waiting for the legal minimum. Independent braking tests consistently show a significant increase in stopping distances on wet roads once tread depth drops below 3mm, which is why 1.6mm is considered a safety floor rather than a safe target.

Visual Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

Beyond tread depth, there are several physical signs that indicate a tyre needs replacing. Cracks or crazing in the sidewall suggest the rubber compound is degrading — often due to age or UV exposure. Bulges or blisters on the sidewall indicate internal structural damage and mean the tyre should be replaced immediately, as a blowout becomes a real risk.

Embedded objects such as nails or screws sometimes seal themselves temporarily, but any penetration of the tyre structure should be assessed by a professional without delay. If a tyre is repeatedly losing pressure, that is a strong indicator something is wrong that cannot be overlooked.

Age as a Factor: The Five-Year Rule

Rubber naturally degrades over time regardless of how much mileage a tyre has covered. Most manufacturers recommend a full inspection by a qualified technician once a tyre reaches five years old, and replacement at or before ten years — even if the tread appears perfectly acceptable.

You can check a tyre's age by reading the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture — for example, "2419" means the tyre was manufactured in week 24 of 2019. If your tyres are approaching the five-year mark, contact Triumph Mobile Tyres for an inspection at your location.
