What Wheel Balancing Actually Does
Every tyre and wheel assembly has small variations in weight distribution around its circumference. These arise from minor imperfections in the tyre mould, variations in the valve stem weight, and slight inconsistencies in the wheel itself. Even a difference of a few grams can cause vibration at speed as the heavier section exerts a rhythmic outward force on every rotation.
Wheel balancing involves mounting the tyre and wheel on a specialist machine that spins the assembly and identifies the exact position and magnitude of any imbalance. The technician then fits small adhesive or clip-on weights to the wheel rim at the appropriate position to counteract the imbalance, bringing the assembly into equilibrium.
Signs That Your Wheels Need Balancing
The most obvious symptom of wheel imbalance is a vibration felt through the steering wheel, floorpan, or seat at certain speed ranges — typically between 50 and 70 mph. The vibration often lessens or disappears at lower or higher speeds, which distinguishes it from other causes of vibration such as worn suspension components.
Uneven or scalloped tyre wear is another indicator. Imbalance causes the tyre to hop slightly rather than roll smoothly, creating a repeating pattern of high and low wear spots around the circumference of the tread.
How Often Should Wheels Be Balanced?
Wheels should be balanced any time a new tyre is fitted — this is standard practice and should be included as part of every tyre fitting service. Beyond that, most technicians recommend checking balance every 5,000 to 6,000 miles, or whenever you notice vibration, after a significant impact with a pothole or kerb, or following any tyre repair.
Triumph Mobile Tyres includes dynamic wheel balancing as standard with every tyre fitting. Our portable balancing equipment delivers the same accuracy as a fixed workshop machine, ensuring a smooth, vibration-free result every time.
